Stormbirds

Natural disasters, such as cyclones, earthquakes, floods, fires and droughts, can be sudden, overwhelming, and deeply distressing experiences for children and young people. The disruption, uncertainty, and loss that follow can affect how they feel, think, and respond in the days and weeks afterwards.
Stormbirds is a small group programme designed to support children aged 6–14 following a natural disaster. It provides a safe and supportive space where children can share their experiences of change and loss, connect with others who may be feeling the same, and begin to make sense of what has happened.
Children may respond to these experiences in different ways — feeling anxious, unsettled, withdrawn, or overwhelmed. Stormbirds helps children understand that these reactions are normal, while gently introducing practical skills and strategies to support their wellbeing and ability to adapt.
Through guided activities and conversations, the programme supports children to build resilience, strengthen coping skills, and regain a sense of safety and confidence as they move forward.
